The custom to celebrate Passion Friday with a procession has been introduced in the XVII century by a rich algherian family in honor of the Virgo, Mater Dolorosa. The intense emotionalism of the ritual and particularly of the sacred play of the "desclavament" reveal the culture of the country of origin: the earth of Catalogna. The first procession pass by to the Vespers of the Passion Friday: start from the Church of St. Francesco and it proceeds along the streets of the center. It is also called "De las dames" because it is composed by women black dressed that accompany the simulacrum of the Madonna "Mater Dolorosa" mourning dressed too.

During the night of Holy Thursday, after "las cerques" (the visits at various sepulchres), the statue of Christ is conducted from the Church of the Misericordia up to the Cathedral: here, with the ceremony of the "alburament", it is raised to the center of the altar solemnly. The brothers watch the whole night over it. The afternoon of Holy Friday is celebrated in the Cathedral, the ceremony is called "missa fugi fugi": it is a liturgy of mourning, marked by the sadness for the death of Jesus. In the evening the "desclavament" ceremony take part: four "varonses" (barons), in oriental custom, depose the Christ from the cross and they stretch him in the "bressol", a rich Baroque style coffin made of pure gold. And it is really in this coffin, covered by a light veil, that San Christus is transported through the streets of Alghero: in the dark and narrow alleys the ancient Catalan songs of the tenoreses resounds.
