St Mary's Cathedral

alghero_santamaria

Started in 1552 and completed in 1730, result of a slow but steady work, it′s an example of Gothic-Catalan architecture (the bell tower and the apse) and Late Renaissance style (the octagonal dome and the impressive doric columns). Among the most important examples of marble furnishings one can see the main altar which dates back to the first half of the XVIII century and, in the left transect, the notable neoclassic mausoleum of Maurizio di Savoia Duke of Monferrato. The sacristy houses some refined examples of Catalan goldsmithery dating back to the XVI century.

The Church of San Francesco (via San Francesco)

Built in the XIV century and partially reconstructed at the end of the XVI century, harmonious example of Gothic Catalan and Late Renaissance architecture. The different shades of stones used for the construction proves the distinct periods of building. In the presbytery, which is dominated by a star-shaped ceiling, you can see the main altar, worked in polychrome marbles, constructed in the XVIII century. The church comprehends a Roman cloister in sandstone, with 22 columns on multisided bases, and a bell tower which dominates the building.

The Church of San Michele

alghero_sanmichele

Started in 1612 thanks to a donation left by Gilbert Ferret an algherian captain in the Spanish Army, to initiate a college for Jesuits. It is a Baroque style church with the beautiful chapel which dominates the panorama of the whole town.

The Church of Misericordia (via Misericordia)

Built in 1662 on the wishes of “Confraternita del Gonfalone”. The recent works of restoration have not in any way modified the existing structure, of which the bell-tower, with its colonial-spanish architecture is an interesting example. The church houses a beautiful wooden statue of Christ dating back to the XVI century and several noteworthy Flemish paintings.
